Norway Implements New Migration Control Regulations

On June 12, 2026, Norway enacted new regulations as part of the European Union's 'Pact on Migration and Asylum.' These measures aim to strengthen control over migration and prevent secondary movements within Europe.

Justice and Public Security Minister Astri Aas-Hansen emphasized the importance of a controlled, fair, and sustainable immigration policy. She noted that the current asylum and migration system in Europe has been misused, placing pressure on the welfare state. Participation in European migration cooperation is deemed crucial to address challenges related to illegal migration and the misuse of the asylum system.

The pact introduces comprehensive reforms to the asylum and migration system in Europe. Due to agreements with the EU, Norway has implemented several legislative acts included in the regulatory package. These include the screening regulation, parts of the regulation on asylum and migration management (AMMR), the new Eurodac regulation, and the crisis regulation.

These changes are expected to enhance Norway's ability to manage migration effectively, ensuring that the asylum system is not exploited and that the country's welfare resources are protected.
